The Reformer for Injury Rehab

Pilates, specifically equipment based is so amazing for our bodies, you may have heard this but are wondering what exactly makes this low impact form of movement so good for us?

-It helps us find alignment with our bones, strengthen our stabilizer muscles, find balance and harmony between our muscles and establish proper posture in our day to day activities. All of this helps to prevent injury as we do all the things that our lives require from our bodies.

Is pilates beneficial if I already have an injury?

If you are already suffering from an injury, pilates could be a fantastic way to rehab it. The reformer is frequently used for injury rehabilitation, why?

-The reformer works the body as a whole rather than JUST the problem area, when working with a qualified instructor it is possible for them to see imbalances in the body which may be causing compensation patterns in movement and posture, these compensation patterns can lead to injury. If we can bring awareness to this, we can work to solve it and thus prevent further injuries.

-Equipment based pilates provides the body with feedback and support with spring resistance and we can modify the machines to fit an individuals body, range of motion, limitations and make exercise more achievable, injured or not.

-Back pain is the number 1 injury that I have worked with people to improve. Strengthening the deep abdominal muscles has been found to reduce pain and injury associated with and surrounding the spine. A few other issues that I have seen great improvement with after working with clients on the reformer and other pilates equipment are Postural Dysfunction, Arthritis, Stenosis, Spondylosis, Rotator cuff impingement, Osteoporosis, Disc Herniation, Muscle strain/imbalance in athletes, Post partum muscle imbalances, Piriformis syndrome, Nerve tension, Whiplash, Pelvic floor dysfunction... the list goes on!

Do you have questions regarding an injury you have and whether or not pilates might be helpful for you? Or maybe you are looking to prevent injuries in the future? Get in touch and I would be happy to help however I can!
